Obituary for Vickie Diane Chappell

Vickie Diane Chappell, age 78, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She was affectionately referred to over the years as “Vick,” “Mom,” “Grammie,” and “My Mama.”
Vickie graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in Pleasant Hill Missouri in 1962 and then attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. On May 30, 1964, Vickie married Dennis Chappell and the couple moved from Pleasant Hill, Missouri to Anderson, Indiana. In support of her husband and his job transfer with the Guide Corporation, the family moved to Monroe, Louisiana in 1974. Vickie graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1986 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Franics Medical Center in the Neonatal/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for several years where she took great pride in caring for her “babies.” In the late eighties and early nineties Vickie and Dennis traveled and worked in several locations domestically and abroad including Taegu, South Korea and Rancho Viejo, Texas, where they had amazing experiences and met lifelong friends. Vickie and Dennis retired in 2001 and returned to Monroe, Louisiana.

Vickie had a knack for decorating and made every place she lived warm and welcoming. She loved her family and would do anything for her husband, children and grandchildren. Vacations with her family, in particular, her grandchildren made her heart complete. Vickie enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, playing board games with her family, decorating and “people watching” from the balcony of her favorite place in Orange Beach, Alabama. She loved and collected Dragonflies and believed they represented hope, courage and new beginnings. Her favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine” and it holds special meaning to those who knew and loved her.

Vickie is preceded in death by her parents, Mina and Robert Moore and sister Janet Gaston.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 58 years Dennis Chappell, son Christopher Chappell, daughter and son-in-law Dennitia and Kerry Lenard, grandchildren Christopher Ryan Sims, Ali Nicole Sims, Caden Timothy Sims, brother Robert Moore and wife Marilyn, brother-in-law Charles Gaston, nephews Mike Hoover and Jeremy Moore and nieces Shelli Ray and Tami Foley.

The family would like to thank the medical staff of the West Monroe Guest House and Glenwood Regional Medical Center for the care they provided during her brief stays at both facilities. A special heartfelt thanks goes out to Elara Caring Hospice staff, Melissa, R.N., for her kindness, competence and compassion. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
