Funeral service for Mrs. Hosie Thomas, 93, of West Monroe, will be held on Monday, November 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Trinity Baptist Church, with Rev. C. Morgan McCalister officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas was born on January 6, 1926 in Grayson, LA to the union of Harmon Johnston and Mary Fitzgerald Johnston, and passed from this life on November 15, 2019 in Monroe, LA.
Hosie Thomas was first and foremost a Godly woman, who was a member of Trinity Baptist Church all of her life. She often cooked wonderful dishes for them and taught Sunday School into her 80's. She reluctnantly gave it up only when she became unable to drive to church. She taught all of her children and others about God's love for us all and it was evident in her everyday life.
She not only reared her five children, but also helped with neices and nephews who she graciously took in and cared for as her own. She thought the world of her husband of 71 years, who referred to her as "sweet thing" as a man who she felt could do anything.
She loved to can vegetables that her husband planted and did so into her 80's as well. She was also a fantastic seamstress and sewed beautiful clothes for her family. I still remember this beautiful yellow suit she made for her daughter.
She would often load up her station wagon and along with her children, would pile in several neighborhood children and took them to the swimming pool many times during the summer.
She had four boys whose hair she cut herself, and was happy to do the same for several of the kids in the neighborhood who could not afford it, always giving of herself, never expecting anything in return. She taught us well.
What a cook she was! She made the best cornbread dressing in the world! I have often wondered how many meals she must have cooked for all of us and others.
She was a smart woman too. Once her oldest boy came home from school frustrated with an algebra problem. When she asked what was wrong and could she help he said "Mom, this is algebra and I don't think you can do this." Her reply was "well, I don't know, let's look at it." Needless to say, the next day when he took it to school, he was the only kid in the class that was able to figure it out!
In her early years she worked for the post office but after children came along, it was all about family.
She always made Christmas time special in our home. On Christmas Eve, family and friends gathered in the kitchen while kids ran out into the crisp air to a hugh fire in the garden to pop our fireworks well into the night. Coming inside only to warm up a bit, and grab delicious treats were smells of cinnamon and hot apple cider filling the air. Oh, and always hot chocolate!
She was a home maker. Yes, two words. She made our home where we all hung our hearts.
We all loved her dearly and memories of her will always fill out hearts with joy! Though we must say goodbye, we are not troubled because we all know that she is in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ and we shall find peace in fond memories of her.
I must add that her husband always told her and I quote:
"Honey, if you go before me, throw me a rope down and pull me up".
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Mary Johnston; sisters, Hazel Belk, Helen Williams, Holly Harris, and Flossie Johnston; brothers, Havard Johnston, Huey Johnston, and Bobby Johnston; and two sons, David Michael Thomas and Steven Thomas.
Survivors left to cherish her memory are her husband, of 71 years, Earl Thomas; daughter, Sherryl Williamson (Roy); two sons, Richard Thomas (Karen) and Scott Thomas (Teresa); special niece, Sandy Dlabaj; two sisters, Hilda Dlabaj and Gloria Hardin; grandchildren, Christopher Thomas (Dawn), Casey Salsbury (Glen), Jennifer Doss (Jerry), John Thomas, Heather Thomas, and Jason Thomas; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Hunter, Aly, Jacob, Kyle, Dusty, Clay, Payton, Kayson, Keegan, and Karly; and great-great grandchildren, Tanner, Cassidy, and Landen.
Pallbearers to honor the memory of Mrs. Thomas will be Jason Thomas, Chris Thomas, Dusty Thomas, Clay Doss, Payton Doss, Gavin Thomas, Jacob Williamson, and Richard Dunn.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the church.
