She could make you laugh; make you smile; make you feel loved; make you feel safe; make you feel important; and put the fear of God into you all at the same time. You all knew her as Gwen. We knew her as Momma.
It’s always fascinated me to hear people describe our mom to me; to tell me of the qualities that they admired about her. They saw the forest where I struggled to even see the trees. Yet, perhaps we also saw qualities that you might have missed.
She was barely 5 ft tall but had the confidence of a giant, and faith in a God that is much bigger. She was never one to limit herself by lacking faith in Jesus to do the work. She lived knowing that she could do all things through Christ, and that with God all things are possible.
She was often the centerpiece of funny family stories. Many laughs were had with her. Her most cherished moments were spent with family listening to and telling hilarious stories of our lives. Those times can’t be replaced and certainly will never be forgotten.
She was devoted to both Christ and to her family. She filled our home with prayers, praise, and the old songs of Zion. She was an excellent example to us of how to involve yourself in the church. Out of a love of God and people she faithfully served at church whether teaching Sunday School, bringing visitors to church, cleaning, or fund raising.
On Thursday, April 14, 2022, Gwendolyn Johnson Morris took the opportunity God gave her to become a part of his heavenly choir.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William Morris, her parents, and numerous siblings.
To share her legacy, she leaves behind a daughter, Connie Fire (David), a daughter, Alisha Lowery (Paul), and a son Chris. Also, her grandchildren, Brittani Fire, Kaitlyn Fire, Kyla Lowery (Maddie), Kirstin Walsh (Jonathan), and Adrian Lowery, as well as her great-granddaughter, Everly Kate Walsh. She also leaves behind a brother, Weldon Johnson (Linda).
