Obituary for Cheryl Sevilla Powell (Banks)

Cheryl Powell
“Now more than ever I know God is with me…I know Him.” -Sherry Powell

Cheryl “Sherry” Banks Powell, 67, marched through the gates of Heaven on the evening of January 31, 2023. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends at her home in Farmerville, Louisiana.

Visitation for Sherry will be held at 12:00pm Friday, February 3, 2023, at Griffin Funeral Home. Funeral ceremony will follow immediately at 2:00pm with Chaplain Ricky Baker officiating. Sherry will then be laid to rest beside her family at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Calhoun.

The eldest of three daughters, Sherry was born to Billy and Patsy Banks on July 26, 1955, in West Monroe, Louisiana. She joined the military in 1974 and was extremely proud to be a former United States Marine.

After initially being less-than-impressed with him, she fell for a tall little league coach named James Powell, and they married on September 18, 1992. She spent the rest of her life loving him and never letting him forget who was boss.

Sherry spent most of her career in Human Resources. While not the most exciting profession, she brought life and laughter to every place she worked with her humor and fun-loving spirit, making life-long friends along the way.

There are no words to describe how much she loved her family. Above all, her kids and grandkids were her entire world. She was a true Mama Bear - intensely loving yet fiercely protective of her babies. Her favorite role was Grandma, and she took that title very seriously. She was a fun and feisty Nanny / Nana, up for just about anything unless it involved balloons or clowns. For as much joy as her babies brought her, she gave them even more.

Anyone who knew Sherry knew she was tough as nails. But the strength and resilience she possessed over her final months was extraordinary. Her will to live, for her family, for her babies, was unmatched.

For everyone who loved her, there is now a void in our hearts. A Hallmark-movie-watching, Elvis-singing, Christmas-decorations-in-October size hole. But she’s given us so many beautiful memories and her immeasurable love and unwavering strength to fill our hearts and keep her with us forever.

Waiting to greet her at the Pearly Gates were her parents, Billy and Patsy Banks, and her uncles and cousins she loved dearly.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband, James Powell; children Clay Locklear and wife Misti, Sandi Thomas and husband Jason, Eric Powell and wife Vasti, and Casey Powell and wife Jennifer; Amanda Gardner and husband Derris, grandchildren Reagan, Maddox, Levi, Emory, Gus, Ben, Ethan, Dylan, Myles, Cullen, and Jack; sisters Sandy Skinner and husband Larry, and Tammy Shannon; honorary sister Carmen Banks and husband Tommy; sisters-in-law Joann Crosser and Betty Sue Reyna; brothers-in-law Wayne Powell and wife Kay, and Sheldon Powell and wife Sherlyn; beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; and special loved ones Eddie Emory and Craig Pate.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Emory, Jay Emory, Joe Powell, Shadly Powell, Mike Temple, and Mike Chisolm.
