Obituary

Albert Lemuel Vernon (U.S. Navy Retired CPO), aged 91, died Tuesday, December 17, 2019, amongst his fellow comrades at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Home. He was born October 31, 1928, in Shreveport. He was raised in Monroe until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, during World War II. Like many brave men of that time, he eagerly answered the call to protect his country. He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 45 years, Jeannette, brother Richard, his oldest daughter, Aldene, and favorite step-daughter Elizabeth.

He is survived by daughters, Brenda Stevens, (Houston), Holly Vernon, (San Diego), and Chris Bataille (Austin); dearly loved stepsons, Larry Brown (Elijay, Georgia), Andrew Brown (Austin), and Glenn Brown (Austin); sister, Patrice; sister-in-law, Helen; beloved grandchildren, Laura, Aaron, Matthew, Michael, Maurice, Jared, Sonja, Brielle, Ben, Katherine, Larry, Robert, Stephen, Christopher, Travis, Tyler, and Mikayla, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Albert attended elementary school in Monroe, before dropping out after eighth grade to go to work to help support his family. He joined the Navy in 1945, and was stationed at Point Loma Naval Base, San Diego, where he married and raised four daughters. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, specializing in radio communications. He distinguished himself by rising to the highest rank available to an enlisted man, Chief Petty Officer. Albert was well-liked and respected by his fellow sailors. The strength of his work ethic was legendary, as was his ability to fix anything. He was honorably discharged after serving for 20 years. In 1966, he began a promising career in the budding electronics field building the first integrated circuits at Cubic Corporation in San Diego. Later, he migrated to Austin, Texas, working for the University of Texas at Austin, before joining the Travis County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. He had the unique skills needed when TCSO began regular boat patrols of Lake Travis. He retired from TCSO in 1994, and returned to his hometown of Monroe in 2009 where he spent his remaining years before falling ill.

The family wishes to thank the expert care he received at Glenwood Regional Medical Center, Landmark Nursing Home, and Heart of Hospice Monroe. He was dearly loved by all who worked with him. We are especially grateful to the staff at the NELVH, where he spent his final days amongst other veterans who devoted their lives in service to this country. He rose from the most humble of beginnings, faced many difficulties in his life, and distinguished himself through hard work and his sharp mind. He will be dearly missed.
