A celebration of life for Carl Travis Chesney will be held at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, 2018 in the chapel of Griffin Funeral Home, 911 Warren Drive, West Monroe, La. 71291. Pastor and long-time friend, Newton Smith will be officiating.
Travis passed away on Sunday morning, August 19, 2018 at 2:30 am. He was one day shy of his 72nd birthday.
Travis was born in Jones, Louisiana on August 20, 1946 to Necie Brixey and Dan Chesney, both from Conway County, Arkansas. He was the youngest brother to five siblings and was preceded in death by parents, Necie and Dan Chesney; sisters, Maggie West and Retha Pennington; brothers, Bob Chesney, Jim Chesney, and Odell (Buck) Chesney; nephew Danny Chesney, and daughter-in-law Wendy Ellis Chesney.
He is survived by his wife, Cherryl Chesney, son David Chesney, daughter Janis Chesney-Cortez and husband, Francisco; grandchildren Logan Marie Chesney, Mia Lynn Chesney, Julian Nicholas Chesney-Cortez, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Travis served his country by joining the military branch of the Air Force in 1965 at the age of 19. He graduated at Sheppard AFB in Texas from the training course for U.S. Air Force jet aircraft mechanics. He was then assigned to Homestead AFB in Fla. Travis volunteered for deployment to Vietnam and served from December 1967 to December 1968 at Bien Hoa AFB. Some of his duties included jet bomber plane wreckage recovery and repair.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid gun collector. He lived most of his adult life in West Monroe, before retiring to Bastrop, La. He was greatly loved and will be missed.
